Book preview / roundtable discussion with Yana Foqué and Johan Pas

As part of the exhibition Martin Maloney, we invite you to a round table dedicated to the forthcoming publication on the artist’s practice, conceived as a parallel space of the exhibition. The conversation will bring together Yana Foqué, curator of the show and editor of the forthcoming book, as well as  Johan Pas, curator, writer, lecturer, and researcher of artists’ publishing practices.

Throughout his practice, Martin Maloney frequently turned to language, writing, and the form of the book—often as a site in which an action, a performance or a thought could continue to unfold and expand. His books and textual works resist a straightforward one-to-one translation of an artwork into a publication, but operate as companions – which is why so many years later they become key to understanding his work. 

The conversation between Foqué and Pas will offer an opportunity to look at Maloney’s practice through the lens of publishing and to reflect on broader questions around artists’ books, documentation, language, and the role of the publication as an artistic articulation.

The round table is held within the partner program of steirischer herbst ’26.

Yana Foqué is the artistic director of Grazer Kunstverein, curator of the exhibition Martin Maloney and the editor of the forthcoming publication.

Johan Pas holds a PhD in art history and is a curator, writer, and lecturer. His research focuses on neo-avant-garde and conceptualist art of the 1960s and 1970s, with particular attention to artists’ strategies in curating, education, and publishing. He has published extensively on these subjects, including Artists’ Publications: The Belgian Contribution (Koenig Books, London, 2017) and A Kind of “Huh?”: Artists’ Publications, (not) a User’s Guide (Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, 2023). In 2015, he founded the Collection for Research on Artists’ Publications (CRAP). He is currently preparing a book and exhibition on the Wide White Space Gallery (1966–1977). Pas teaches and researches at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.
